Are all Digital Channels on UHF?

The UHF and VHF TV stations have been present for decades now. Also in this new era of digital television, both these frequency bands continue to play as VHF and UHF channels. Due to the shift from the analog channels to the digital channels has brought along various changes. But did it all stay on one frequency band is a bigger question.

The UHF and VHF TV stations have been present for decades now. Also in this new era of digital television, both these frequency bands continue to play as VHF and UHF channels. Due to the shift from the analog channels to the digital channels has brought along various changes. But did it all stay on one frequency band is a bigger question.

One of the main difference between UHF and VHF is the size. The half wave dipole in case of channel number 2 would be 10 times long than that for channel number 28. This in turn means that there would be a need for an elaborate UHF antenna. When more elements are added to the UHF antenna, you can obtain higher gain as well as directivity. The UHF waves can get easily blocked by the hills and also they would not be able to travel beyond a certain horizon. However, the UHF band can easily pass through the buildings as well as the foliage when it comes to providing indoor receptions. The moisture present in the atmosphere can either reduce or attenuate the UHF signal strength when it comes to long distance. Also the attenuation would start to increase in terms of frequency. When all of the conditions are right then the UHF band can even travel at longer distance without any breakage.

What exactly is DTV? It is basically the transmission of the various television signals with the help of digital encoding. When you compare the analog TV content with the DTV content, you would notice a lot of difference. The difference would be in terms of audio and video. DTV is considered to be one of the innovated advancement carried out by technology.

For receiving the DTV signals from all of the stations which are present in your area, the antenna should be able to pick up both UHF as well as VHF channels. There are certain TV antennas which can pick up good VHF reception or UHF reception. However, there are certain other antennas as well, which can pick up both. Most of the TV antennas that are sold in the market as HDTV antennas are said to be best when it comes to receiving the UHF channels but they do not perform that well when it comes to picking up the VHF signals. Hence it would be better to check before purchasing the TV antenna so that you do not miss out on any of the favourite channels.
